About the programme
You'll fast discover that the real beauty and benefit of our Graduate Development Programme lies in the breadth of what you'll be exposed to.
From biosecurity initiatives at air and seaports, to forestry, fisheries, and food response, you'll have a hand in creating policy and standards and engaging with stakeholders in the many and varied primary industries. You'll have excellent scope to experience all facets of MPI operations.
Once the programme reaches completion, you can align your interests and aspirations with one of the many career opportunities on offer.
You could find yourself in an advisory role in aquaculture, forestry, food, or other specialist areas. You may become a science technician or a policy analyst. Or perhaps an investigatory or frontline operational role will be right for you.
Whatever path you choose, your time on the Graduate Development Programme will set you up with the insights and experience for the best possible start.
How it works
This is an 18-month learning and development work programme open to recent university graduates. You receive a full-time salary as you work in a number of areas across MPI. The formal work rotation is designed to show you as many areas of MPI as possible. Some rotations may see you working in one of our offices outside of Wellington.
As well as working with MPI's team of leading experts and contributing to meaningful and rewarding projects, you'll gain specialist skills and training through a structured learning and development programme. You'll also have the support of managers, a mentor, a 'buddy', and a great network of peers.
Near the end of the programme, we'll work with you to find a role within MPI that suits your career aspirations.
Who can apply
To be eligible for a place on the programme, it is essential you have a recent tertiary qualification, backed up by strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Clear, confident communication skills are just as important, as are sound relationship management abilities and a collaborative working style.
The programme is open for applications from people with permanent residence or New Zealand/Australian citizenship only. This is because MPI's Graduate Development Programme is a permanent role that is not part of any immigration skills shortage lists.
This programme is also targeted at recent graduates so applications will only be accepted from people who graduated or finished their studies no longer than 2 years before the start date of the programme.
