You can request any information held by MPI, including internal rules or guidelines for decision making, and personal information. Details about who can make a request, and how, are in the Ombudman's Guidelines for making an OIA request.

MPI's OIA policy
Our OIA policy sets out our responsibilities for:
- releasing official and personal information
- withholding official and personal information
- investigations by the Ombudsman or the Privacy Commissioner into MPI's decisions under the OIA, and generally.
Purpose of official information and privacy acts
The Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) and the Privacy Act 1993 help New Zealanders to:
- participate effectively in policy decisions and law making
- access official information about themselves.
Under the acts, every New Zealander can ask any government department about the information it holds.
OIA compliance reporting
The State Services Commission (SSC) and Office of the Ombudsman have a programme to improve transparency under the OIA. This includes reporting on the volume of:
- requests
- complaints to the Ombudsman (and their outcomes).
