What is PHSIN?
A Production and Handling Site Identification Number (PHSIN) helps to trace the sale and distribution of produce – like apples and stone fruit. It's a replacement for the MPI orchard registration system (ORS).
By registering production sites within the PHSIN system, you can trace produce from production to retail without having to record production site details on export packaging. This means you only need one number for multiple crop types produced on a single production site.
You can also have multiple PHSINs to help you differentiate between blocks within a production site or produce from more than one production site.
PHSIN registration is voluntary.
Pipfruit, kiwifruit and avocados are not included
You won't need a PHSIN for pipfruit, kiwifruit or avocados as there are industry-specific registration processes in place. Instead, contact the relevant industry organisation:

What to do if you have an MPI ORS number
If you'd like to keep the same MPI ORS numerical digits, be aware that we process requests on a first come, first served basis.
We can also transfer existing MPI ORS numbers to new property owners if we have written authorisation from the previous owner. This must accompany a request for an MPI ORS number transfer.

We keep a list of plant exporters registered within PHSIN on our website.
You are entitled to access your information and request corrections where necessary. If you would like to do this, please contact us.

How to apply for PHSIN
To apply for a PHSIN, you'll need to complete an application form.
Registration costs $80.00 (incl GST) for each registered PHSIN.
You'll need to renew your registration each year. Renewals costs $51.11 (incl GST). To renew your PHSIN, fill out the PHSIN renewal form.
You're responsible for renewing your PHSIN registration on time.

Processing your application
We'll let you know your PHSIN is ready within either 2 working days (if you emailed us) or 10 working days (if you sent your forms in the post).
If you require a PHSIN urgently, you will need to pay an additional processing cost.
PHSIN cancellations
We'll cancel a PHSIN if:
- you request a cancellation
- your registration was issued in error
- your PHSIN hasn't been used in the past 12 months
- your renewal hasn't been paid within a month of its expiration.
How we use PHSIN information
The Privacy Act 1993 requires us to properly collect, manage and disclose personal information acquired for the purposes of our lawful business.
We may use PHSIN information in a number of ways, including:
- industry-approved crop surveys
- trace-back of a product to its production site
- communicating with and locating growers in the event of a pest or disease response.
