Forestry in New Zealand

Forestry is New Zealand's third biggest export industry, after dairy and meat. Our forests provide a range of benefits to society, the environment, and economy. MPI manages, protects and promotes New Zealand forestry through a range of programmes and activities. We also work with our international partners to promote sustainable forestry in New Zealand and overseas.

Forestry in the ETS

Forestry is important in helping New Zealand meet its international climate change obligations. Under New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), forestry owners or leaseholders can earn carbon credits that can be sold to entities that emit greenhouse gases. Learn what you must do when registering and managing a forest under the ETS.
