Forest Products Export Standards - Phytosanitary Requirements of Canada

Wood Products - Packaging

Import Permits or Declarations

Brokers/ Importers must attest to one of the following:

"Wood packaging contained with shipment displays the ISPM No. 15 compliant stamp."
OR
" Wood packaging material is accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate ie: approved treatment per ISPM no. 15."
OR
"Wood packaging material is made out of manufactured wood which is exempted from ISPM No. 15."
OR (when it applies)
"No wood packaging contained with shipment."

Certification Requirements

Wood packaging material and dunnage should be marked in accordance with ISPM 15.
Phytosanitary certificate accepted in lieu of ISPM 15.

Wood/ Timber - Sawn (Non Tropical Species)

Import Permits or DeclarationsImport permit not required.
For heat treatments the phytosanitary certificate must contain the following additional declaration:

“Each piece of wood has attained a minimum temperature of 56ºC throughout the profile of the wood (including at its core) for a minimium of 30 minutes”.

Approved Pre-Shipment TreatmentsSawn timber must be treated with either Methyl bromide or heat treatment as specified below.  This treatment must be specified on the phytosanitary certificate.
FumigationMethyl bromide fumigation at:
  • 48 grams/m3 for 24 hours at a minimum temperature of 21°C or above;
  • 56 grams/m3 for 24 hours at a minimum temperature of 16°C or above; or
  • 64 grams/m3 for 24 hours at a minimum temperature of 10°C or above.
Wood turning blanks must be less than 200mm thick if fumigated.

Uncertificated decorative wood items including baskets, branches, and wreaths containing cones must not exceed 1.5cm thickness and must be completely sealed with paint, varnish or other sealants.
